What you REALLY should know about deposits and credit cards
Even though everything is paid in advance via Sunny Cars, you will still have to pay a deposit at your destination. Usually this requires a credit card in the name of the driver. Below we have listed 7 points about the deposit and credit card, which you should definitely read before getting into your 100% carefree rental car.
1. Check: driving licence, passport, credit card and voucher
When picking up the rental car, you must present a valid driving licence, valid passport, valid credit card in the name of the primary driver along with the Sunny Cars voucher.
2. Deposit is mandatory
ou pay for the rental car in advance in the Netherlands; at your destination you pay the rental company for any extra services or accessories. The rental company will also ask you for a mandatory deposit: after all, you're receiving an object that represents quite a high value. The deposit serves as a guarantee in case of damage, theft, fraud or negligence. The deposit amount depends on the local partner. The amount is always clearly stated in the rental conditions. Payment of the deposit requires a valid credit card in the name of the primary driver. Use of the credit card usually requires a PIN; keep this number secret.
3. No credit card in the name of the primary driver = no rental car
Never forget: a valid credit card in the primary driver's name. We cannot emphasise it often enough, because without a valid credit card and a PIN you cannot leave a deposit and the rental company will not be willing to give you a car. This might sound strict, but it's quite logical: the rental company wants certain guarantees before giving you such as valuable product that allows you to drive anywhere. You enter into the rental agreement personally. This is why the credit card should be in your name. So not in the name of your parents or a friend, but in the name of the person signing the rental contract as the primary driver.
4. No cash, chip and PIN or debit card
To ensure everyone's safety, you may not pay for the deposit in cash. In this way, you won't have to travel with large amounts of cash and the rental company isn't left with stacks of cash that may be appealing to robbers. A credit card payment is the quickest way, which is nice, because you'll be in your rental car in no time. Use of chip and PIN or a debit card is not permitted either. This is because you cannot transfer any money back to a debit card, so the rental company won't be able to return the deposit to you at the end of the rental period.
5. Temporarily having a higher limit on your credit card
The amount is withdrawn from your credit card – you should therefore consider temporarily increasing your credit limit. After the rental period, the rental company with return the amount within 5 days.
6. No credit card, but still want a rental car?
In rare exceptional cases, you can pay the deposit in cash. However! This is only possible if you apply by telephone via our booking department and only applies very rarely in Greece, Spain, the Canary Islands and the mainland of Portugal.
If you don't have a credit card yourself, but a travel companion does, you can book an AD package – which includes an additional driver in the all-in rental price – and put the booking in the name of the travel companion. At your destination you can then co-sign as an additional driver and still drive around carefree.
7. Reimbursing deposit in case of damage
We want to give our customers and partners as many guarantees as possible, to make renting a car pleasant for everybody. If you were to suffer damage: don't panic, we'll work it out. The rental company will write off the entire deposit and not return anything after the rental period. They determine the exact loss and charge the difference between the actual loss and the deposit amount on to you. Sunny Cars will reimburse the full loss amount to you if you claim it from us, obviously provided the conditions are met. This is fully in line with our 100% carefree Rent a Smile philosophy.
