The quality of roads in Greece is variable. In tourist areas and near big cities, roads are usually fine, but not everywhere! Watch out for holes in the road, loose stones and animals crossing. You may encounter unpaved roads. If an unpaved road does not have an official road number, your rental car is not insured there.
We recommend the Small or Economy category for short drives, for instance to do some shopping or to a nearby beach. A Compact category rental car is better for longer drives, as you can use some extra space. The Comfort or higher category is recommended if you are going to a mountainous area in Greece, because of the higher engine power.
