GreenSeat Projects

GreenSeat facilitates the compensation of CO2 emissions by investing in sustainable energy projects in developing nations. Sustainable energy projects help to prevent greenhouse gas emissions and include, for instance, wind farms, biogas plants or hydroelectric power plants. Designed to address the challenge of climate change, these projects reduce levels of atmospheric CO2 and consequently represent a concrete step towards mitigating climate change. In addition to achieving reductions in CO2 levels, the GreenSeat projects also positively impact the local community (e.g. higher rates of employment, knowledge transfer and income). All projects of the Climate Neutral Group are audited by an independent, accredited certification institute (including Tüv Nord and KPMG Sustainability).

Project example
An example of one such project is being implemented in Indonesia in Mobuya Village, which is situated along the Poigar river in the northern part of the island Sulawesi. The area around Mobuya Village is home mainly to local tribes who draw from the resources of the local area, cultivating, for instance, rice and vegetables. Much like the rest of Indonesia, this province is dependent on fossil fuels, including coal and diesel, for meeting a substantial part of the demand for electricity. As a result, Indonesia is one of the world’s largest emitters of greenhouse gases. Contributing to a reduction in CO2 emissions, the three turbines of this hydroelectric power station in Mobuya Village generate electricity, driven by the river current. This energy project did not involve the construction of a large dam, as the water used to generate power is fed back into the river. The advantage of this approach is that the local population does not have to deal with dam‑related flooding and can continue to live in the area.

In addition to preventing CO2 emissions, this project also offers new opportunities to the local population. For instance, new jobs are created, offering equal opportunities for men and women, and technological knowledge is transferred by means of training courses. Major investments in the local area were made, including for roads and bridges – which would not have been possible without this project – and the local population enjoys a more reliable source of power.

By making your rental car ‘green’, you support this project and neutralise the environmental impact of your flight. In addition, these projects also dramatically and positively impact the local community.
