The fairest fuel policy is full-full. A full-full fuel policy does not necessarily mean that you will receive and return the car fully refuelled, even though the name suggests so. The minimum age to drive a rental car in Malta is usually 25 years, but this can vary by location and even by category. From Malta International Airport, you can be in the heart of Valletta within 15 minutes. Follow Triq Ħal Luqa and then Triq l-Industrija to the north. Along the way, you'll pass historical sites and get a first impression of the island's rich culture. The route is easy and toll-free.
Want to see more of the island? Then drive about 25 minutes to enchanting Mdina via the Triq l-Imdina. This ancient capital is known for its narrow streets and medieval architecture. Or head south to the picturesque fishing village of Marsaxlokk, reachable in 20 minutes via the Triq tal-Barrani. Here you can enjoy fresh seafood at the colourful harbour.
Malta's roads range from modern main roads to narrow streets in villages. Many roads are narrow and can be busy, especially in urban areas. Bear in mind that you drive on the left side of the road and some roads are winding with limited visibility.
For Malta, a compact or economy rental car is ideal. The roads are often narrow and parking in cities can be a challenge with a larger car. With a smaller car, it's easier to navigate narrow streets and find a parking spot faster. Moreover, these cars are fuel-efficient, which is nice for your wallet and the environment.
The best time to visit Malta is in spring and autumn, from April to June and from September to October. The weather is pleasant then and it is less crowded than in the summer months.
Malta offers a delicious mix of Mediterranean and local dishes. Be sure to try pastizzi, a puff pastry snack filled with ricotta or mashed peas.
