Heraklion Airport is just 5 kilometres east of Heraklion city centre. You drive via the Leof. Ikarou and Eth. Antistaseos to the city centre in about 10 minutes. On the way, you pass the beautiful coastline and can already enjoy the atmosphere of this historic city.
From Heraklion Airport, you can easily drive to other major cities in Crete. Take the E75 west to reach Chania in about 2 hours. On the way, enjoy the views of the coast and the impressive mountain scenery. Prefer to drive to Rethymno? Also via the E75, but to the west, you can reach this charming town with its Venetian harbour and narrow streets within 1 hour.
Crete's road network is a mix of modern motorways and older, narrow roads. The main roads are generally in good condition and easy to drive, but in the more remote areas you may encounter narrow and winding roads. Bear in mind sharp turns and sometimes unexpected road conditions, especially in mountainous areas.
Given Crete's varied terrain, a car with a slightly larger engine is recommended. An SUV is ideal for touring, as it has enough power for the mountainous areas and is comfortable for long drives.
