Road signs in Portugal are mostly in Portuguese. In some tourist areas like the Algarve, you can also find road signs with English texts.
Busy days on Portuguese roads
Escape the traffic jams and plan your trip smartly; Portugal's roads are busiest in July and August, but holidays such as Dia de Portugal on 10 June and Carnival (dates vary annually, but always in February or March) can also be busy on the roads.
Toll roads in Portugal
There are 29 toll roads in Portugal, on 9 of which you can only use an electric toll box. We therefore recommend renting an electric toll box, which automatically debits the toll amount from your credit card. If you do not take such a box, you will have to pay the toll at a post office within 5 working days.
Refuelling in Portugal
Tip: In Portugal, refuelling is cheapest at petrol stations attached to large supermarkets.
Note: the Portuguese names of petrol and diesel are very similar! Gasolina is petrol and Gasóleo is diesel.

The minimum age to rent a car in Portugal is usually 24 or 25, but this can vary depending by rental car category, location and local partner. It is often possible to lower the minimum age from 25 to 21 or even to 19 or 20 for some rental car categories. Check the specific conditions for the age and the young driver surcharge you may have to pay.
The cost of renting a car in Portugal depends on several factor, such as the type of car, pick-up and drop-off location, and any extras such as GPS or child seats. Portugal's road network is of good quality. It consists mainly of highways (autoestrada), whose names always begin with the letter A. Many highways are subject to tolls.
If you mainly want to make short trips to the supermarket or have a coffee at a local café, the Small or Economy category will suffice. Do you plan to cover long distances along the Portuguese coast or through the interior? Then some extra legroom is recommended and you should go for the Compact category. If you want to drive through Serra da Estrela or another mountainous area in Portugal, we recommend a rental car from the Comfort category or higher because of the higher power.
From Pastéis de Nata, grilled sardines, Bacalhau à Brás, the perfect espresso (Portuguese: café) to a Francesinha, Portuguese cuisine turns every meal into a feast. Also taste the uniquely Portuguese Vinho Verde (green wine) or a glass of Port, but park your rental car first. Safety first!

Additional third-party liability

Fair fuel policy
You always rent a car with us under the fuel policy full-full. This means you return the rental car with the same level of petrol it had at the handover. You therefore do not pay an expensive fuel surcharge and know exactly where you stand.
Refund of excess
If you rent a car from Sunny Cars, you do not have to pay the excess. In the case of damage to the rental car, you pay the excess up front and on site, for us to then return the sum into your bank account soonest.
